Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the lessons take place?

At 21 Widecombe Way in Exeter (EX4 5BZ). That’s at the top of Stoke Hill, less than two minutes’ walk from the side entrance of Stoke Hill Junior School. Alternatively, lessons can take place online.

When do the lessons take place?

At a time that is convenient for you. I teach from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week, both during term time and in the holidays.

How long is each lesson?

A single lesson is 50 minutes; a double is 1 hour 50 minutes.

How many pupils/students are in the lessons?

Lessons are often one-to-one, but pupils/students sometimes study with friends in small groups of two or three.

How long is a course?

The minimum length of the course is one half-term, which corresponds to six or seven lessons, depending on the length of half-term. During school holidays, the minimum length of a course is five lessons per week, e.g., one lesson per day from Monday to Friday.

For international students, the minimum length of a course is one university term.

What will you do in the lessons?

The focus and objectives of the course are agreed in advance with the pupil/student and (where appropriate) their parents.

In addition to this, your child will, where appropriate, complete a diagnostic assessment and I will liaise with their school regarding areas for improvement, copies of mock papers, requirements for upcoming assessments, etc..

On the basis of these initial discussions, I will design a programme of study which will be shared with you.

How will I know my child is making progress?

Parents are provided with frequent updates about their child’s progress based on independent work completed both in the lesson and at home. Where appropriate, these updates will include predicted grades/scores and recommended next steps.

What are your rates?

One-to-one GCSE and SATs lessons are £60 for a single lesson; one-to-one EFL lessons for international students are £80 for a single lesson. I offer a 20% discount for more intensive courses, e.g., a double lesson per week or a five-lesson holiday course. Furthermore, the rate per person is significantly less if learning with friends, e.g., £35 per person for a single lesson in a small group of two for GSCE or SATs tuition.

Full course fees are due upon booking to reserve your slot.

If you have a specific question about rates that is not covered here, please contact me.

What is your cancellation and refunds policy?

Fees are non-refundable once paid except under exceptional circumstances. Your slot is held exclusively for you, and there are no credits or make-ups for illness, even with 24-hour notice.

Refunds are only issued if a student cannot complete the course due to a verifiable, long-term circumstance that prevents all tutoring.

Do you have a DBS certificate?

Yes. I worked at Queen Elizabeth's secondary school in Crediton until August 2026, and have an up-to-date enhanced DBS certificate. I will bring the physical certificate to our first consultation for you to see.
